What Exactly Is Intuitive Math?
As we’ve been discussing, we employ a rich, intuitive approach to teaching mathematics. We focus on using visuals, diagrams, and models to illustrate how numbers are coming and going throughout the course of a problem. It is an approach that focuses not just on computing products and percents but on understanding the logic of the calculated quantities, as well—including why and how they were manipulated. Our problem sets build on understanding one layer at a time so that students develop a complete picture of the mechanisms behind what they're learning works.
Why Is Intuitive Math Beneficial?
This approach equips students with mathematical concepts as if they are tools (and indeed, they are remarkable ones). With word problems at the core of our strategy, we showcase to students the power of the mathematics they’re learning. We get students to examine a question from every angle so that they can apply the principles to multiple contexts and smooth out any fuzzy edges around the periphery of their understanding. We know that all too often, students are taught a specific way of solving a problem and asked to duplicate it on an assessment. With Singapore-based intuitive math, we want out students to understand why they are doing what they're doing and how they could adjust their approach if the question were a little bit different.
Is Intuitive Math Right for My Child?
Using visual models first as a foundational tool an instruction, we transition our students to being able to organize numbers (and eventually variables) in their minds. We help them build networks between numbers and see how they relate to one another so that they can move them and manipulate them at will, using any operation of their choosing.
Not only is this a rock solid approach to developing math skills, but this also to develop their intuition on a more fundamental level. The better they get at taking what they learn and placing it in a network of old and new ideas, developing relationships between concepts and seeing how they can move around, the more they become grow and learn to trust their intuition and grow in confidence at handling ambiguity.
